Bifosfonatos por vía oral: consideraciones en el área odontológica

Resumen

Los bifosfonatos, especialmente los administrados por vía intravenosa, han sido utilizados desde la década de los 90 para el tratamiento de enfermedades que involucran tejido óseo. Una de las complicaciones más frecuentes de su uso es la osteonecrosis de los maxilares. Los casos de osteonecrosis de mandíbula asociados a bifosfonatos son generalmente relacionados a traumas menores, por ejemplo la realización de extracciones dentarias y la consiguiente exposición de hueso al medio oral, aunque la etiopatogenia aún no está totalmente determinada. El tratamiento de estas lesiones es variado y se adecúa a la etapa en que se encuentran, aunque es primordial la prevención en cada una de ellas.
