Abstract

Dated May 6, 1999, Dr. Fernando Mañé Garzón handed me the biography he had written about his father, Dr. Alberto Mañé Algorta, which I had personally requested. He accompanied it with a business card that read "As promised, here is a portrait of my father. Aff. Fernando Mañé Garzón". Subsequently, he published it in "Médicos Uruguayos Ejemplares" (F. Mañé Garzón and Antonio Turnes, eds.; Montevideo, 2006, volume III, p. 47-48) and the Sindicato Médico del Uruguay (History of Medicine in Uruguay) published it on its web page. On the occasion of the centenary of the installation of the Military Hospital of Montevideo, the biographical sketch was partially reproduced in the book alluding to the commemoration (Centenario del Hospital Militar Central de las Fuerzas Armadas 1908-2008, Montevideo, 2008, chapter 10º). The biographical sketch we insert here faithfully follows the one written by his son, to which I have added events and anecdotes that complement the very busy life and personality of the man who was Director of the Military Hospital of Montevideo, surgeon of the same and prestigious physician, politician and diplomat in the first half of the 20th century. The rank of colonel was granted to him by the Republic of Paraguay in gratitude for his pacifying work in the Chaco War.
