Abstract

Deep brain abscesses are rare and the basal ganglia location does not exceed 4% of total brain abscesses.

Its complication with pyoventricle is rare, presenting a high morbimortality close to 80%.

Staphylococcus spp and streptococcus spp are the most commonly identified germs in this type of abscesses, which are usually secondary to distant foci of infection.

In a not inconsiderable percentage of cases, the source is not found.

We present the case of a patient with a thalamic abscess that was complicated by a pyioventricle.  He underwent surgery and after prolonged antibiotic treatment he made a full recovery.
