Abstract

The year 2014 marked the 100th anniversary of the beginning of the First World War. We have decided to dedicate two articles to them. In the first one, a panoramic development of the war. In this one, to remember the Uruguayan physicians who for various reasons were or decided to get involved in the war campaign. Somehow, the biographical sketch we made of Dr. Eduardo Blanco Acevedo is also part of this story.

The Great War took place mainly in the European continent between July 28, 1914 and November 11, 1918, when the German Empire requested the armistice.

At that time, several Uruguayan physicians were living in Paris in old Europe, seeking to specialize or to update their respective specialties. This city was still the epicenter of medicine and there were courses and demonstrations that were not available in their country of origin. As assistants in the hospitals, these doctors were surprised by the outbreak of the war and committed to assisting the wounded who arrived in increasing numbers and without warning from the front. Among them all, the imposing personality of Eduardo Blanco Acevedo stands out.
