Abstract

Chagas disease, also known as American trypanosomiasis, is a disease considered an important public health problem, affecting mainly the population in rural and suburban areas of Latin America.
The prevalence of Chagas disease in blood banks in Uruguay, according to data reported by PAHO in 2005, was 0.47%.
The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of seropositivity for Trypanosoma cruzi in blood donors of the Central Hospital of the Armed Forces (H.C.FF.AA) in the period 2008-2012.
An observational, descriptive, retrospective study was carried out, using as data sources the information available at the Central Laboratory, Serology Section of the H.C.FF.AA.
The prevalence of donors seropositive for Trypanosoma cruzi found in the period analyzed was 0.20%.
The migration of people infected with T. cruzi from endemic areas to non-endemic countries generates a new public health problem for these countries due to the risk of blood transmission. Screening in blood banks is a fundamental tool in the control of this disease through the identification of cases.
